RYA Approved Powerboat Courses in Spain
Through our chosen training partner Artemis Yachting offer a range of boat training courses and exams in Spain from courses for beginner level right through to advanced. All our partners instructors are fully-qualified and their boat training courses in Spain are endorsed by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association). We are also able to provide own boat tuition here in Spain.

Boat training courses generally run between 9.00 and 5.30 each day, with a break for lunch, setting off from Puerto Marine, Benalmadena.

Powerboat Level 1- Introduction to Powerboating
This one-day RYA course is designed to provide a complete novice with the basic skills necessary to pilot a powerboat. Safety is paramount to the training which includes preparation, handling, manoeuvring, leaving and coming alongside. Learning how to tow and be towed is also taught. There is a minimum age restriction of 8yrs.

Powerboat Level 2 – National Powerboat Course
All the skills needed to handle a powerboat in coastal waters, at both low and high speeds, are learnt in this two-day RYA course. It includes launching and recovery, mooring, berthing, navigation, anchoring, towing and collision regulations. Once completed successfully, you are entitled to the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for power driven vessels up to 10m (33ft), which is obligatory in most European countries. Pre-dominantly a practical course, the short theory section includes basic chart work. There is no basic level of knowledge required although there is a minimum age limit of 12yrs. (A CEVNI test is required for the inland endorsement of the ICC.)

Intermediate Powerboat Course – Day Cruising
For those who use powerboats on a regular basis and/or need the skills required to deal with more advanced conditions, the 2-day RYA Intermediate Powerboat course is recommended. Building on knowledge gained during Powerboat Level 2, the syllabus involves teaching to a standard required for longer coastal passages by day including pilotage, cruise planning and GPS and general navigation. Applicants must be over 16yrs.

Advanced Powerboat Course – Day and Night Cruising
This course is intended for the more experienced power-boater, whether as a professional or serious amateur. You may be required to take an exam prior to enrolling as the level of knowledge needed is high and must be competent to either Intermediate Powerboat or RYA Day Skipper Shorebased.
The aim of the Advanced Powerboat course is to further your abilities so you are able to safely pilot a powerboat both by day and night in more testing conditions. You will learn greater navigation skills, including use of GPS in high-speed navigation, berthing in different situations, advanced handling and manoeuvring and search and rescue procedures. The course is used to train those within professional organisations such as the Coastguard, RNLI, the military and the police.
Once completed successfully, you will be awarded the Advanced Powerboat Completion Certificate which becomes a Certificate of Competence on completion of a practical exam, if you wish to take it.

International Certificate of Competence
The International Certificate of Competence is for people intending to pilot motor vessels between 10m (33ft) and 24m (80ft) in length and is a legal requirement in most European countries. It proves that you have reached or exceeded the standard necessary to pilot a powerboat safely.
The theory section includes a short written test and to have it endorsed for use on inland waterway you must also pass the CEVNI exam. As the course is usually run on board your own boat, it can be individually tailored to meet your specific needs. It is only available to British citizens over the age of 16yrs and a current photograph is required for your license.

PWC Proficiency Certificate
While a license for a Personal Water Craft is not compulsory in all areas, it is a good idea to get some expert tuition not only so you learn to become a more responsible and safe rider but to find out how to really get the most enjoyment out of your jet ski. You’ll learn about high and low speed handling, launch and recovery, safety, theory and craft anatomy and it also fulfils licensing requirements. There’s a minimum age requirement of 12yrs and you will be required to bring a current photograph for your license.

* Anyone under the age of 16 yrs must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when taking a course. Once certified, they may only pilot a boat when in the presence of an adult (over 18) who also holds a proficiency certificate.
